Painting the complexity of human relationships in all their many shades
Glorious Glyndebourne returns this winter taking the show on the road, bringing a special week of classic operas, including this brand new staging of Puccini's bittersweet tale of bohemian romance, the company's first in over 20 years. Telling the story of a group of poverty-stricken Parisian artists, this inspirational opera is a jewel in the canon, evocative both for both opera newcomers and practiced audiences alike.
What is the story?
The story chronicles the lives and loves of a spirited but destitute collective of artists, philosophers, and musicians. When the poet Rodolfo is entreated by Mimi, his beautiful and delicate neighbor to help her light her last candle, he loses his heart immediately. He and Mimi embark on a dizzying relationship that captures the whole scope of Bohemian life, from raucous parties at various watering holes to spirited fights with their landlord. The ultimate paean to love, life and art set to a lushly romantic and heartbreaking score.
